About Tiaozini Wetland
Located on the coast of Dongtai, Tiaozini Wetland is situated at the apex of the Yellow Sea Radial Sand Ridge Group, with a total area of about 1.29 million mu. Its unique geographical location makes it a central node and key area on the East Asia-Australia migratory bird migration route. On July 5th, 2019, China’s Yellow (Bohai) Sea Migratory Bird Habitat (Phase I) was inscribed on the World Natural Heritage List, becoming China’s 14th and Jiangsu’s first World Natural Heritage Site. Tiaozini Wetland is one of its most important components.
The wetland is formed because of its location and famous for birds. Every year, millions of migrating birds stop here to rest, change their feathers and spend the winter, making it a veritable “Bird Paradise”. Since 2021, the number of recorded bird species has increased to 410, including 21 national-level key species, 71 second-level species, with 4 critically endangered species, 9 endangered species and 16 vulnerable species on the IUCN Red List. The critically endangered species, spoon-billed sandpiper, known as the “Panda of Birds”, is of great significance to the “umbrella protection”, and its global population is only about 600. However, more than 200 of them can be observed at the most in Tiaozini Wetland, which is the highest in the world, fully proving that Tiaozini is the one of wetlands with the highest ecological protection level.
