Japanese director Ryo Takeuchi’s 10-minute documentary telling the true story of Nanjing’s anti-epidemic efforts has gone viral in both Japan and China.
Titled "Emergent report: A city that sees no more new confirmed cases," the video recorded the daily lives of ordinary people in Nanjing, Jiangsu Province amid the COVID-19 outbreak. Since the release, the documentary made the front page of Yahoo! Japan, the most visited web portal in the country, and was often aired on major Japanese TV networks including TBS, TV Asahi and Fuji TV.
The first episode, alongside other videos and images highlighting how Nanjing tackled the coronavirus outbreak, was donated by Takeuchi and his Chinese wife Zhao Ping to Nanjing’s city archives center on April 3. A donation certificate was awarded to them. Takeuchi said that he will continue to donate self-made productions highlighting Nanjing in the future.
The first episode has been distributed in Japan and other countries in more than 10 languages. The second episode, focusing on hotels, supermarkets and hospitals in the lockdown, was released on the same day on Japanese platforms.
Nanjing Archives has increased efforts to collect as many comprehensive anti-epidemic archives as it can to form a complete record of how Nanjing fought against the deadly virus from the very beginning of the outbreak.
To date, more than 600 documents, over 300 photos and 2G of videos have been collected and stored. Donations from the public, including expats living in Nanjing, are still welcome to enrich the resource as much as possible.
